PSA’s Featuring Celebrities Create Suicide Awareness

Operational Stress Control – Building a Resilient Navy

Understanding stress, how it affects us, and knowing what to do when it becomes too much for you, your family or shipmate is key to building resilience, the ultimate goal of the Navy’s Operational Stress Control (OSC) Program.

One measure of the OSC Program’s success is suicide prevention and it’s a year round, All Hands effort. In addition to providing training and practical tools to help build psychological resilience, the OSC effort includes using all our outreach channels to highlight the latest resources available to help Sailors and family members in crisis.

PSA’s featuring celebrities create Suicide Awareness

There are several suicide awareness public service announcements (PSA) available online to reach Sailors, military families and veterans. Most notably, Blue Star Families and The Creative Coalition, a non-profit advocacy organization within the entertainment industry, in partnership with the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) and, Inc., joined forces to create several unique PSAs to raise awareness and educate on the topic of crisis and suicide prevention.

The videos feature Hollywood stars sharing a message of hope and encouragement, reminding servicemembers and families there is help available and they are not alone.

“Suicide is a community issue, not just a military issue. This public service announcement sends an important message – which is that the American people care about our service members and want for those in trouble to get help,” said Bonnie Carroll, founder and president of TAPS, who recently served as the co-chair of the Department of Defense Task Force on Prevention of Suicide by Members of the Armed Forces.
